The right tires can transform how your ATV or side-by-side handles, climbs, brakes, and rides. Before choosing a set, think about where you ride most often, how aggressively you drive, and whether you need a tire built for work, trails, mud, rocks, or a mix of terrain.
Start with the correct tire size
Your current tire size is printed on the sidewall, usually in a format such as 27x9-14. The first number is the overall tire height, the second is the width, and the final number is the wheel diameter. A replacement must fit your wheel, and changing tire height or width can affect clearance, gearing, steering effort, and handling.
If you are considering a different size, check your machine’s available clearance and manufacturer recommendations first. Larger is not automatically better. A properly sized tire that suits your terrain will usually perform better than an oversized tire that rubs or adds unnecessary weight.
Match the tread to your terrain
- Trail and all-terrain: Closely spaced, moderately deep lugs provide predictable handling and a smoother ride across mixed surfaces.
- Mud: Deep, widely spaced lugs help dig for traction and clear packed mud from the tread.
- Rock and hardpack: A larger contact patch and durable tread compound help with grip, stability, and puncture resistance.
- Work and utility: Look for dependable traction, stable handling under load, and a durable construction suited to repeated use.
Consider ply rating and construction
Ply rating is an indicator of tire strength and load capability, not simply the number of physical fabric layers. A higher rating can offer more resistance to punctures and sidewall damage, but it can also create a firmer ride and add weight. Choose a rating that matches your machine, terrain, load, and riding style.
Radial tires generally offer a more compliant ride and consistent contact with the ground. Bias-ply tires are often valued for their tough sidewalls and predictable performance in demanding off-road conditions. Neither construction is best for every rider.
Replace tires thoughtfully
Check tires regularly for cuts, cracks, exposed cords, uneven wear, damaged beads, and slow leaks. Maintain the pressure recommended for your machine and setup. When replacing only two tires, match the size and tread characteristics carefully so the machine remains balanced and predictable.
